About me...
Viridian Scalemaker, mermaid tailmaker !
My real name is Marine.
Ever since I started mermaiding,
people often ask if it is my real name or my mersona's !
Let me tell you how I got from Marine to Viridian...

I didn't always want to be a mermaid! I was more of a 100% fish kid, exploring coves as a great white shark or a little goby, depending on my mood. Beneath the surface and the problems of humans. I didn't want to be constrained in my swimming, so much so that I left my swimming club as soon as I was selected for a competitive course. So the first time I heard about mermaiding, I did not look past the costumes and the cameras and went on my way. Until 2022, when I saw something different in mermaiding: no races. No codes. Amateurs, conventions, light or heavy mermaid tails... then it clicked.
To swim as a mermaid is to swim freely.
In 2022, I'm in the middle of a career change. I have a Ph.D. in epistemology and the history of science. I love learning, discovering how things work, how they develop, how they evolve... It gave me opportunities to try out lots of different things, it was stimulating... yet something was missing. When I started freeing up my swimming again, that something came back to the surface. I'd wanted to be an artist to draw everything I wanted to do, and it kept coming back to me. I wanted to create. I could put my rigour, my attention to structure and coherence, at the service of my imagination.
So I picked up my pencils again, and decided to 'scientifically' create fabulous worlds, where I could invite others to join in.
You surely understand by now : I do not separate science and art, logic and emotion. I believe we ned both to know ourselves. Just as it took time to rediscover my own way of swimming, it took time to discover and befriend my highly sensitive nature. Today I see it as the source of my constant brainstorming and my love for details that make me marvel at almost anything.
In the same fashion, I discovered my queer identity by finding out how much I hated being assigned to an identity by others. I want to be proud of who I am, wether it is too much or too little for others. So my deepest wish is that any visitor feels legitimate and welcome here in my space.
You can trust me to welcome you as you are, and use my creativity and sensitivity to create the mermaid tail of your dreams.
I hope you've enjoyed diving into my world!
I also talk about my creative process and my values on instagram and facebook, and I have a few other projects to flesh out these exchanges. So if you feel like talking about it, you know where to find me...
